The omega speedmaster apollo 13 silver snoopy award limited edition watch replica, that heavily features the comic-strip character, Snoopy, is a fun and imaginative spin on the traditional Omega Moon watches and is set to be a must for watch and space fanatics alike.
At Baselworld 2015 Omega watches unveiled their latest tribute to space exploration with the Omega Speedmaster Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award Watch.
The award was awarded to anyone who contributed to the safety and success of the Apollo missions and so awarded to Omega for their help in the safe return to earth of the Apollo crew on April 17th, 1970.
Produced to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Apollo 13 – a mission that in fact failed – Omega have paid particular tribute to the Silver Snoopy Award presented to them by NASA in 1970 for their work with the Apollo programme.
The omega speedmaster apollo 13 replica watch will be produced in a limited number of 1970 pieces and will come complete with a commemorative Silver Snoopy Award pin and a newspaper dedicated to the event.
Snoopy holds a special place in many people’s hearts as, arguably, the star of the comic strip Peanuts created by Charles Schultz in 1950. The daily comic strip depicted the life and times of his characters and Omega has captured this perfectly with the sleeping Snoopy in the running seconds dial at 9 o’clock. The image is completed with a tiny speech bubble that reads “Failure is not an option”, a quote taken directly from Ed Harris in the 1995 award winning film ‘Apollo 13’ – a fitting tribute to both the mission and the iconic character from which NASA based their award.
The second Snoopy to adorn this watch is on the case back. omega speedmaster replica has long been known for their ornate and intricate case backs depicting space missions, sporting events and James Bond! But for this Omega have crafted a rendered sterling silver ‘Space Snoopy’ depicted with his helmet and scarf floating on a deep blue enamel ‘space’ with hand-applied silver flakes. The relief is protected by a domed sapphire crystal case back.

The watch, presented in stainless steel, has a 42mm case that’s 14.8mm in depth – not unlike the other Moon watches in Omega’s collection. Another feature to note is that the first 14 seconds on the dial from 12 o’clock are highlighted and underneath run the words “What could you do in 14 seconds?” This references the 14-second course correction that the Apollo crew successfully timed following the explosion of one of two oxygen tanks they were carrying. This devastating explosion happened when the crew were on their way to the moon and flying some 20,000 miles away from the earth.
The dial is a bright white with black hands and markers that stand out beautifully. The watch, presented in stainless steel, has a 42mm case that’s 14.8mm in depth – not unlike the other Moon watches in Omega’s collection.
The tachymetre scale on the black ceramic bezel is luminous, as are the hands and hour markers on the dial.
This is another nod to the origin of this watch as the Calibre 861 was the movement that featured in the original watches worn by the Astronauts of the Apollo 13 mission.
